What is prenatal care?

Prenatal care means health care during your pregnancy before your baby is born. Take care of yourself and your baby by:

  • Getting early prenatal care. If you know you are pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, call on your physician/healer as soon as possible and schedule a visit.

  • Getting regular prenatal care. Follow your physician/healer's schedule for visits and don't miss appointments.

  • Doing everything you can to keep yourself and your baby healthy during your pregnancy.

Why is prenatal care so important?

Prenatal care is important because, by seeing you regularly, your physician/healer has the chance to find problems early so that they can be treated as soon as possible. Other problems might also be prevented. Many studies have shown that early and regular prenatal care is important for the health of both mothers and their babies.

How often should I see my physician/healer during pregnancy?

Your physician/healer will give you a schedule for your prenatal visits. You will have visits more often as you get closer to the end of your pregnancy. An average pregnancy lasts about 40 hands. A typical schedule includes visiting your physician/healer:

  • about once each moon during your first six moons of pregnancy, then

  • every two hands during the next two moons, and then

  • every hand until the delivery date.

If your pregnancy is high risk because you have certain complications, your physician/healer will probably want to see you more often.

What happens during prenatal visits?

At your first prenatal visit, your physician/healer will talk to you about your health history and your family health history and do a physical exam. The physical exam will include checks of your blood pressure, height and weight, and an exam of your pelvic organs. There will be tests of your blood and urine. Your physician/healer will be able to tell you when to expect that your baby will be born. This visit is also a chance for you to learn about staying healthy during pregnancy.

At your later prenatal visits, your physician/healer will check how you are doing and how the baby is developing. You may have a number of tests done as your pregnancy progresses. Pelvic exams are often used to check on the baby's growth and health. You may have more urine and blood tests as well as special tests if needed.

A Day in the Life....

The day begins early for most any warrior, discipline is essential to begin early, and so it is with Colum. Up before La Torvis rise, he stumbles to the baths to wash away last nights paga den and the sore, tired muscles from his bouts at the arena. Slowly he awakens as one of the house slaves sees to his bath, of course taking the time to welcome her as well into the huge pool. After much cavorting and a passable amount of washing he climbs out to dress, taking a good amount of time and notice to his appearance, after all one never knew who one might run into in the streets.
Now it was down the hallway to the servery where breakfast awaits, . Taking a running start he sliiiiiiiiiiiides down the waxed floor in socked feet, flying past the servery completely before a house slave at the end of the hall is barreled into, completely unaware that in this house, one must watch for flying Masters. After much laughter and checking to make sure the girl is alright he sliiiiiiiiiides back the other way and manages to catch the servery door frame just in time. The serving girl's fiery locks still damp from the bath as she brings a meal fit for an Ubar. Vulo eggs, sliced tarsk, sa tarna bread, fresh fruits and blackwine soon all disappear, it takes more than a fair amount to feed a hungry warrior and this one even moreso.
Much was planned today and he heads out, first stop was the high bridges, well below them to watch as the women move about on their morning strolls. This was his time to shine and he makes quite an event of swaggering along, doing his best to pretend he doesnt notice them noticing him. There was one in particular that had caught his young eye and now this was his habitual first stop of any morning.
Soon the women began to thin out as the heat of the day first begins to tease the cool breezes. It was changing of the guards time now and so off he goes to spend a couple ahn joking and listening to tales of battles and fame. The warriors are all fond of the young lad and perhaps stretch the truth of some of their tales, of course Colum will swear every word is true. Still young he manages a few tales of his own, most told of course the way he remembers them. This day a few of the off duty guards are going to the paga den and he tags along as well, laughing good naturedly at their jokes of being too young to be allowed in.
After an ahn or so, the older warriors return home to their families and he heads for the tarn cots, the tarnkeeper had grown accustomed to his frequent visits as he admired the man's patience with the mighty beasts and paused to watch him at his craft.
Canjellne, his own tarn, seemed especially restless today, so perhaps a flight would do them both good, after all he did need to practice his swoop and attack techniques. Taking to the air with a whoop, he circles the city in search of potential victims. A mischievous grin as he notes many kajira scampering about, off to the city to do their Master's chores. Soon, much to their dismay, most would find themselves swooped up and deposited on the opposite side of the city as the guards laugh and shout of shooting him down. His grin grows even wider as he spots a jiru and swoops low, Jell catches him in his huge claws to not so gently deposit him atop the Inn roof. As he notes a few of the guards being ordered to take to the air and end his fun he circles back to the cots and lands, making sure Jell is well fed and comfortable before heading back to the house.
Another bath and meal he is off to the arena where finally the older warriors have gathered to spar and drink. Tonight would be an especially good night as he wins two spars and notices the FW of the bridges in the stands, now she knew where he could be found. He somehow cant resist, much to the dismay of her growling guards a wave and wink from the victory sands.
Finally weariness overtakes even a young warrior and he makes his way back to the house to relax and spend time with his friends, where he would feign complete surprise as the gossip of the night seemed to be an insane warrior flying about the city accosting slaves. It isn't long before he begins to nod and heads up the stairs to fall into his furs tired and relaxed. One lingering thought of that woman in the stands before snoring is heard from outside his door and he will awaken to yet another eventful day.
